I had so much fun making these favors for a good friend who was throwing her daughter a story book themed baby shower. This is homemade whipped body butter. I used 8 ounce wide mouth mason jars, and on the lids we used round craft paper labels to print story book quotes. You could customize the quotes and use these for any occassion. I made them for teachers gifts this Christmas, and also made a few jars for my teenage nieces and my grandmother. For my sister's bridal shower I spray painted the tops with chalkboard paint and added a handwritten message using a chalk pen. Regardless of whether you use a label or a chalk pen, it is a good idea to finish it with some clear spray enamel so the message doesn't smudge.

The whipped body butter is pretty simple to make and using essential oils you can customize the scents to your liking. (Learn more about the essential oils I use here). Here's the recipe:

Ingredients:

  • Equal parts shea butter (I like this one) and coconut oil (You can find great deals on Amazon)

  • 2 tablespoons beeswax pellets (Like these)

  • About a cup of Cornstarch

  • Your favorite essential oils (Learn how to get oils at wholesale here)

Optional add ins:

Directions:

  1. Using a double boiler (or if you're like me and don't have one a glass bowl over a pot) melt together equal parts shea butter and coconut oil and about 2 tablespoons of beeswax (give or take). The beeswax will take a little longer to melt, so just keep heating until everything is liquid. If you want to add any of the optional add ins, now is the time. If adding honey, just use a small amount and allow it to melt to combine.

  2. Now you have to wait. I'm not the most patient person in the world, so I put my lotion in the fridge to cool. Just be careful you don't leave it too long or you have to wait for it to come back to room temperature before you can go on to the next step.

  3. Use a stand mixer with a wisk attachment to start to whip the body butter, adding in essential oils until you get the depth of scent you like. Slowly add in the cornstarch. (Unless you like being covered in white stuff, then put it all in at once ;) ). It will start to have the consistency of whipped cream - not exactly, but you will know when it's done.

  4. Immediately put into jars. The body butter will continue to set up and after a few hours it will be very firm. Run a finger through it though, because it is silky and feels great going on.

A few notes:

  • This is not an exact science, and the amount of the ingredients is pretty flexible. I usually start with about a cup of shea butter and a cup of coconut oil, but I just eyeball it. No need to dirty up a measuring cup. That makes about enough to fill 4-6 of the eight ounce jars. If you are making a smaller batch, you'll want to reduce the cornstarch accordingly.

  • You can use any essential oil you like. The possibilities for combinations are endless. My favorite essential oils to use are vanilla and lavender. Lime compliments the coconut oil nicely and is a fun summer scent. If you are a sandalwood fan, it works great in this body butter. If you want more of a perfume smell, try some ylang ylang. Grapefruit is another great choice.

  • I love this as a moisturizer for my face. I add some frakenscense or helichrysum, which are good for the skin. If you have very oily skin, this isn't the moisturizer for you, but I love it. (I also wash with a homemade facewash that has coconut oil in it- another recipe for another time).

  • I want to try replacing the coconut oil with sweet almond oil, but I haven't done it yet. I'll let you know if it is successful.

Enjoy your homemade body butter! If you try this recipe, please leave a comment below to let me know how it turned out.
